Initial Samples

Some example queries provided by TextDigger.

  • Rudy Giuliani to run in Republican primaries What makes this example cool is the work done in selecting word senses.
    • There are 55 senses to "run", and the one Digger picked was "run, stand, or compete for an office or a position". It then decided to expand the query to include "race" and "campaign". You'll notice similar behavior with the senses for "Republican" and "primaries"; this is all done through Digger's contextual analysis algorithm.
  • dogs used to tree raccoons This is another example of Digger picking up a correct though atypical sense of a word.
    • For tree, our pre-processor picked up a very uncommon use of the word: the act of chasing an animal up a tree.
    • Smart query expansion: Rather than just blindly expand the 600 possible terms for all the query words, Digger decided to only pull out 12 terms, all relevant to the query at hand.
  • inexpensive rifle for scout modification
    • If you type this search into any other search engine, you'll likely get dictionary terms for 'scout rifle', which is not what the query is about. With Digger, you get several pages discussing rifles that would be inexpensive to modify to scout specifications.
  • moving a chess horse
    • This query is interesting because, using chess as a clue, horse is interpreted as a chess piece even though the piece in question is more commonly called a knight.
